June Butler be a Clown Day
Lion Harry Smith convinced Norfolk County Council and the Lions Club to celebrate
the spirit of June Butler, who participated for many years in the community
as a clown. June especially interacted with the youngest in our town
spreading the joys of being a clown.
We celebrated the annual
June Butler be a Clown Day
at Silver Lake Market, encouraging young people to become clowns
and be recognized with special prizes for their creative efforts.
Spring is great time to rekindle the community spirit, get the kids
involved in a fun activity while perpetuating the memory of a local heroine.
The popularity of this event seems to have waned, despite Norfolk
County declaring the 3rd Saturday of March anually as
"June Butler be a Clown Day",
but I am sure will resurface
again and again, because kids of all ages need a time to just have fun. Every year
the Canada Day celebrations see many clowns of all ages bringing a smile
to young and old alike, entertaining the crowds as only clowns can.
Santa Claus Parade
Lions take an active role in the annual Santa Claus Parade.
As usual the parade was a huge success in 2009,
blessed with great weather. The largest number of floats in
recent memory, accompanied by three bands, were enjoyed by
exceptionally large crowds. The excited children could be
heard exclaiming how great the parade was as they do each year.
Santa and his entourage arrived on the pier by boat, as is the tradition
in this historic fishing village.
Several Lions participated in bringing
the Spirit of Christmas to Port Dover. Lion Bill (Citizen of the Year 2009)
and his wife were chauffeured by Lion Gord Johnson, in his convertible.
Dignitaries played an important role: MP Dianne Finley,
MPP Toby Barrett and Mayor Travale judged the floats and Councilor Wells,
as Town Crier welcomed Santa on his arrival.
All in all a great time was had by everyone but none more than the
wide eyed children who enjoyed the proceedings, above all Santa, immensely.

The Port Dover Lions Club has participated in Flapjack Freakout since its inception.
Port Dover Composite School students under the guidance of
Teacher Richard Delaney and Principal Elaine Thomas contacted the Lions,
Walt Long and Jim Fekete, for support with their UNICEF fundraiser idea.
The first year was a bit of
trial and error. Lion Jim contacted the Golden Griddle in Brantford for
batter the second year. Golden Griddle generously donated not only pre mixed batter
but napkins and corn syrup. Neeltie Arnott, who runs a catering business,
came along in later years to help with the event, getting local merchants
to donate various supplies.
The majority of the cooking takes place at Silver Lake Market, where
Lion Jim gets busy at 5 A.M. preparing pancakes for the 4-500
students and members of the community, who are welcome every year.
The student council each year decides what project will be supported
by the profits from event. Twelve to fifteen Lions help serve the
hungry students and guests.
The collaboration between the students, Lions and
other volunteers helps students understand their community service curriculum
much better.
All who participate truly enjoy the day's festivities. The School Band plays
while everyone enjoys a hearty breakfast.
Dover Cliffs Centre, Long Term Care Centre, has many residents who are unable
to get out and enjoy their Golden Years. The Lions have conducted
an annual Monte Carlo afternoon for the residents with Wheels of Fortune
and a Black Jack table or two. Residents are provided with gambling chips
to wager and test their luck against the odds. All able residents are
encouraged to participate and those attending really enjoy the afternoon.
The Lions provide a special catered dinner following the popular diversion.
Residents are able to cash in their winnings and feel the thrill of victory.

The team's participation helped raise over $75,000 this year! Way to go team!

Harry Misner Ballpark located on St. George Street, accessed from Thompson Drive
by the No Frills Mall, has a proud history. Named after the Port Dover Lions
first President, served two years in that office
1938 to 1940, has been the home of champions many times but always the home
of our ball playing youth. Currently Lion Gord Johnson is in charge of
the committee to make the park all it can be for our community. The Minor Baseball
Association does a great job keeping the grounds suitable for championship ball.
Many years ago our Club built a
Medical Centre
on St. George Street
to attract much needed Doctors to Port Dover. Things do come full circle.
Across from the medical facility we installed a playground
so the young children would have a place to frolic. In 2004 the equipment
once again needed upgrading.
With a generous contribution from the
The Ontario Trillium Foundation
new equipment was installed, meeting the current safety standards.
The rededication was attended by MPP Toby Barrett and Norfolk Mayor
Rita Kalmbach as well as one of our founding members Brian Varey.
We hope the playground will get many more years of safe enjoyment.
Located right next to the children's playground is our former Lions Den.
For many years the facility served as our social hour meeting place prior
to the dinner meeting, as well as many committee meetings. Frequently
community groups would have meetings, card parties or social get togethers
in the smallish facility. The walls were lined with years of memorabilia
from around the world, trophies and plaques commemorating some achievement or
special recognition. Bowling Greens were located on the other side of the Den,
used by a small group of bowlers for many years. In 2007 these two properties
along with the
Tennis Courts,
built with community support in 1949, were sold.
Between 2007 and 2010 we worked with
Norfolk County, the
The Ontario Trillium Foundation
and several community
groups to provide a
Community Sports Complex;
housing Tennis, Skateboarding and Road
Hockey facilities; with a significant $150,000 (from the sale of the properties)
being contributed by the Lions Club. The Sports Complex is planned for property
owned by the Grand Erie District
School Board, housing the
Port Dover Composite School.
The land purchased by our forefathers back in 1945 has served the community well.
Lion Lee Buffin mentioned the purchase during his
address
celebrating our 70th year in the community.
Other facilities built on those lands include the
Port Dover Arena
as well as the Port Dover
Lions Community Centre.

Health and Fitness Expo
A most appropriate project started by the enthusiastic Lion Pat Young to address
the concerns of the community with health and fitness in mind.
Public participation by all ages, along with experts and vendors turned into a hugely succesful event. Once Lion Pat left the pride the enthusiasm and dedication to this
labour intensive project faded.
2013 was the Final Health and Fitness Expo

Food Fight Challenge 2011
Norfolk County is gearing up for a HUGE Food Fight.
Following a very successful challenge between Roraty clubs in 2010, that raised
2800 Kg of non perishable goods and $3400 for local Foodbanks, the Rotary challenge
was extended in 2011 to a
Lions vs Rotary Food Fight. The Rotary clubs of Simcoe and
Delhi issued the challange to Lions clubs in Norfolk and as Lions will; Simcoe,
Waterford, Vittoria, Long Point, St. Williams and of course Port Dover
Lions clubs all responded to the challange.
The public is ecouraged to participate and support their clubs in the
"Food Fight" to benefit the Norfolk County Foodbanks, according to each community's needs. Regardless of which organisation manages to garner the most donations,
the winner of the event will be the needy families of Norfolk County.
The battleground will be:
Wellington Park, Simcoe - on Friday April 15th 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Come out and support this most worthy cause. Bring a neighbour, bring a friend but
make sure you donate generously.
The Results are in
The community benefit from the Food Fight challange is significant.
The Port Dover Lions alone collected 5,130 pounds of food with a significant
additional contribution of 1,030 pounds by the students at Port Dover Composite School,
for a total of 6,160 pounds. Port Dover also raised $9,483, which includes a matching grant (up to $5000) by the Port Dover branch of the Scotiabank.
The challanging Rotarian's
figures are incomplete but they managed to gather 4,240 pounds of much needed food and
$4924. Between all the participants $19,135 and 10,400 pounds of non perishable food will serve the needy in the county.
The club with the best results will be served a BBQ in the summertime.

Penny Drive
The penny has been discontinued from minting by the Canadian Mint in 2012.
Although some merchants still accept pennies, most no longer expect them.
This gives us the opportunity to gather the lowly penny no longer available from
the Chartered Banks and donate buckets full of money to the needy Food Bank.
Do Your Part DONATE Your Pennies

Gord Partridge conceived and implemented this hugely successful event, designed to help
fund our commitment of $100,000 to the Norfolk General Hospital construction fund.
The event, the first of its kind in this area, has become a well supported, successful
annual fundraiser.
The need for improving health care facilities never seems to end. The latest $25,000
commitment to help purchase a CT Scan unit has now been fulfilled but I am convinced
there are other important needs in the hospital we will soon be supporting.

Lion Pat Young and his team.
Each year the Port Dover Lioness do a great job acquiring
items for and running the silent auction. Our creative Lioness are second
to none when it comes to community service and support.
Tradionally our attendees have
danced to, or at least have been
entertained by the fantastic sounds of the extremely talented young people of the
Toronto All Star Big Band.
Unfortunatly, after eight years, this event finally ran out of steam due
in large part to higher prices for everything that made the event such a success.

Build a Better Hospital Fund Raiser
You Could Win – 2017 KIA Soul!

Kia Raffle Rules of Play

All members of Port Dover Lions Club attending the September 19th 2017
meeting took part in the $30,000 cheque presentation to NGH Foundation.
Front row holding the big cheque are (left to right) draw chair Alan Strang (black shirt), Lions Club President Joe Greene, Port Dover KIA delership owner Kelly Fulsom,
NGH Foundation member Jennifer White and Lion Past President John Hall.
ALL the profit from Port Dover Lions Club's Kia car draw that was awarded at the end of June was earmarked for Norfolk General Hospital Foundation's Build a Better Hospital campaign.
A highlight of the service club?s meeting on September 19 was to donate $30,000 to NGH Foundation fundraising chair Jennifer White.
The entire membership of the Port Dover Lions Club gathered outside St. Paul's Parish Hall to be part of the presentation. The Lions had earlier pledged $50,000 over five years (to 2019) to the hospital campaign.
In accepting the cheque from Lion President Joe Greene and Kia Car Draw chair Lion Alan Strang, Ms White said "this donation is huge" stating it was the largest received since she had taken over the fundraising position earlier this year. Ms. White told local Lions "your generosity is phenomenal and very much appreciated, thank you."
Kia car draw chair Strang thanked Port Dover Kia dealership owner Kelly Fulsom for his assistance and co-operation in making the fundraiser so successful. He also noted that every club member deserved credit for making the draw a success.
